Sidney Hardwick is a Canadian by birth, a chemist by formal training, and a potter by choice.
Stoneware clays are "thrown" on a potter's wheel. They can be decorated using wax resist or scrafitto designs - typically fish, flowers and plants, or glazed in a solid colour of the clients choosing.
She mainly produces work in durable stoneware because she likes making pots and basins that are not only attractive, but that can be used everyday.
Her work is fired in a gas kiln to 1280 degrees centigrade in a reducing atmosphere, producing blue, green and copper red glazes, as well as the more usual cool greys and browns.
Sidney Hardwick was born in Ontario, Canada, educated as a chemist in British Columbia and trained as a potter at adult education classes in Oxford and Reading. She has also attended short courses led by Mick Casson, Jack Doherty and David and Margret Frith. She taught pottery at St. Birinus comprehensive school for boys, her work as a potter spans over 40 years!
Sidney has sold her work at the Abingdon Craft Festival for twenty years, and with the Oxfordshire Craft Guild (OCG) in Oxford and Woodstock.
She has been a member of the successful Ten Potters Group since its inception 11 years ago, and has participated in Oxfordshire Artweeks for over 21 years.
